COACH
Foreign Language Project sponsored first IFLT conference featuring Dr. Stephen Krashen!
Language
teachers from throughout the country and the world converged in Los Alamitos, California, for the International Forum on Foreign
Language Teaching July 27-31. Los Alamitos (and its high school) is located near Los Angeles in northern Orange County between Disneyland and Seal Beach.
Master teachers taught lessons in a number of languages and coached participants in a variety
of best practices for language acquisition. Dr. Stephen Krashen, professor emeritus at the University of Southern California, who has published more than 350 papers and books contributing to the fields of second language acquisition, bilingual education, and reading, presented the conference keynote. Krashen also led panel discussions on current
research and best practices in language instruction.
COACH Foreign Language Project
was the proud sponsor of this new conference in second language teaching methods. IFLT provided
hands-on training in Comprehension-Based methods including Total Physical Response, StoryAsking, Sheltered Subject Matter
Instruction, and innovative use of technology. Teachers had a rare opportunity to experience language acquisition
from multiple perspectives: student, teacher and methods coach, with the option to receive 2 units of credit from Chapman University (see below)!
This training was made
more affordable through group discounts available for unemployed teachers, groups, or teachers in their first year of teaching.
In addition to quality training at IFLT, COACH offered visiting teachers a glimpse of summer in southern CA with a
beach bonfire and outdoor barbecue.
